The first thing that usually comes to mind when people mention an injury lawsuit is the women who sued McDonald’s for making hot coffee too hot. Let’s face it, none of us want to have the McDonald’s lady reputation because she was the source of media ridicule for years. So why do personal injury plaintiffs have such a bad rap?
The media has created a negative hype around people who sue. But the truth is, sometime people get hurt and deserve to be compensated. Injuries are often life changing events that we are not emotionally or financially prepared to handle. Imagine facing hundreds of thousands of dollars in medical bills and having to take months off of you work because of an injury that was caused by someone else’s.
I for one do not have a “just in case I slip and fall” savings account that could cover the economic and non-economic cost of a serious bodily injury. Nor do I have insurance that would cover me for such an event of clumsiness mixed with uneven stairs. The law is designed to protect people who sustain such injuries and to encourage property owners to have appropriate insurance coverage.
Do not be ashamed to exercise your right and to seek compensation for damages that you have suffered. Filing a personal injury claim does not make your attorney an “ambulance chaser” and does not make you the McDonald’s lady. You do not deserve to be swimming in debt and out of a job because the nearby grocer left a banana peel rotting on the tiled floor of the produce department.
